Headscarves aka Tudung

Assalamualaikum.

Before I revert, I used to mingle with some Muslims friends. I was always curious how they wrap the piece of cloth around their head and make it stay on all day. I also find it amused when they look different after taking off the hijab. (Not in a disrespectful way tho) There is something interesting about the headscarves but I never had the guts to try even though I am secretly looking forward to try it.

At that time, I found out that Felixia Yeap aka Raisyyah Rania Yeap started wearing headscarves (before she reverts). Then my interest in modest attire grows stronger day by day.

Once, a friend of mine (who is a Muslimah) told me that wearing a headscarf is not compulsory. Yes, wearing a headscarf is not compulsory but covering up the 'aurat' (intimate part) which includes the hair is a must. I am not going to elaborate on this as it might become controversial as some people agree on it some don't. So, let just skip this topic and just let me share my love towards the headscarves alright?

I still remember the first time I tried on a headscarf, it was pretty awkward. I mean it is not exactly my very first time wearing because I bet most of you must have tried at least once when you were younger, you see your cikgu (Malay teacher) wearing a headscarf and you try wrapping your head with a towel at home. Anyways, the first time when I tried on an actual headscarf, it was a funny experience. I was very shy because I think I look different. I just put on for like 2 second and I took it off.

On the day I revert, that was when I officially started to wear a headscarf. I was so scared that my friends and my family might judge me or throw me weird looks. Fortunately, everyone was very supportive. Alhamdulilah.

I think I had written a pretty long introduction. So let us move on to the subject. In this blog, I would like to share some essential pieces of headscarves and other accessories that beginners should have on hand.

1. Brooch and Pins

I see in many Western Hijabis' tutorials, they use safety pins. You could use that as well but here in Malaysia, you can find these beautiful shiny brooches all most everywhere. Some are very cheap, you can even buy them in a bundle but the one that uses Korean stones or Swarovski are slightly more pricey.

Yes pins, you need to stock a ton of them cause they always went missing. You could get them from the stationary shop... there is where I normally got them from.

2. The Slip On Headscarf

This is a very important piece to own as when you are in the rush, you can just grab one, slip on and off you go. Very essential when you are in an ultimate lazy mood and any kind of scarves just don't fit you right. There are many kinds of slip on headscarf as well. I like the one with the hard "awning" because it looks more proper when pairing it with casual/formal attire. Some slip on headscarf are glamorous too, they have beads and Swarovski's stones.

I got most of my tudung sarung from Ariani. Some of the tudungs are at the pricier side but they always have 70% discounts so I do recommend to wait for the sales.

3. A Black Headscarf

A black scarf that you can match with any outfits for any occasion. I would suggest a good quality chiffon shawl because it is easier to handle for beginners. Some satin shawls are too thick and it may be difficult for beginners.

I personally loved the chiffon shawl from Neng Geulis a lot.

4. A Jersey Shawl

I am currently obsessed with scarves that are made from cotton jersey material. It is very stretchy, comfy and easy to put on.

I highly recommend the Jersey Shawl from DUCK because it comes in a wide range of colors and the material is super comfy.

(P/S: I am not sponsored to mention any of the brands. Those are some of the brands that I normally wear and adores.)

I hope this blog can help you if you just started to wear hijab. I wished I knew this earlier back when I just started so I would not spend money on the scarves that I do not know how to wear or doesn't suits me.

Again, it is my free will to wear a headscarf, not because of my religion asked me to do so. Islam is beautiful and so does the headscarf. It does not only reflects my faith but also constantly reminding me that I am worth more than I thought. I used to dress up to draw attention like most young girls would do. I am not saying it is wrong to do that as we all been through that stage.

Sometimes ago, I have low self-esteem. I don't like to mingle with people and never goes to crowded places. I spent most of the time at home. I thought that I wasn't good enough. As I grow older, I realize that I don't have to care what other people think about me. You can never please each and every one of them.

Now as I have devoted myself more towards Allah SWT. I feel more contented and confident. I feel gratitude for things that I have and I am urged to increase my own value.

Thank you for visiting my blog. Hope you have a nice day.
